Stewart is the First Endowed Professor of Burn Surgery and Director of the Burn Center at UM. He also founded the International Center for Automotive Medicine (ICAM), the multidisciplinary Program for Injury Research and Education (UMPIRE) and the Morphomic Analysis Group (MAG).

Since 1997, Stewart has hosted a neutral forum where real-world crash cases are forensically analyzed by a multidisciplinary group of medical, engineering, policy and biomechanical experts to determine potential measures to prevent such injuries in the future

At UM, Stewart directs a large multidisciplinary team of physicians, biomedical engineers and software programmers working in the novel field of analytic morphomics; they are utilizing high-throughput computational techniques to distill clinically useful markers and insights out of medical imaging data and then directly translating them into improved patient care and injury prevention.

He is one of the founders of Prenovo, a start-up that engages patients and caretakers to provide personalized care.
