Dr. Kumar graduated from the College of Dental Surgery Manipal, University of Mysore, India in 1980. He was awarded the University Award Chennbasappa; a cash prize for attaining the highest marks in all four years of Dental School. In addition, Dr. Kumar also won the Dr. T.M.A. Pai Gold Medal; for being the best student of the 1980 graduating class. He went on to complete his Masters in Orthodontics in 1984 from the College of Dental Surgery Manipal, University of Mangalore, India; with highest honors.

He received his D.D.S. and Masters in Orthodontics from the University of Detroit Dental School, with honors, in 1986 and 1988 respectively; being awarded the Best Advanced Standing Student. He completed a Fellowship in Occlusion and T.M.J. Care in 1992. In 1998, he earned Diplomate Status by taking an exam and presenting ten cases (three of the cases being a two year post treatment follow-up); in front of his appointed peers. Dr. Kumar worked at the University of Detroit School of Dentistry, in the Orthodontic Department, as an Assistant Professor until 1994. He then commenced his private practice. He currently is involved in St. John’s Macomb Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery training program; training residents in the Planning for Orthognathic Surgery and TMJ Care.

He is an active member in the Macomb Dental Association, Michigan Dental Association and the American Dental Association. He is also a member of the Michigan Association of Orthodontists, the American Association of Orthodontics and the American Board of Orthodontics College of Diplomates.

Dr. Kumar has published extensively in national and international peer reviewed journals and was a team member involved in the development of a bracket system. He has presented in national and international conferences and has authored chapters in renowned textbooks.

In addition, Dr. Kumar belongs to the Speer Study Group and is involved in the treatment planning of complex cases that need multiple discipline involvement; “ a team approach” with dental peers. This study club strongly advocates the inclusion of a digital work-flow in a private practice setting.

He has a special interest in:

3D Digital planning full- mouth reconstruction
3D Digital work-flow for creating a plaster-less orthodontic office

Dr. Kumar says "My dream is to direct 3D print orthodontic appliances with just an occlusal scan".
